ORELA PASSING REQUIREMENTS |
Each ORELA Administrator, English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), and Multiple Subjects Examination
subtest is scored separately. To pass the Administrator or ESOL Examination, a candidate must pass both
of the examination’s subtests. To pass the Multiple Subjects Examination, a candidate must pass the appropriate
two subtests (see “Who Is Required to Take the Tests?”).
For each test or subtest, an individual’s performance is evaluated against an established standard. The minimum
passing score for each test or subtest is approved by the TSPC and is based, in part, on the professional judgments
and recommendations of Oregon educators. Passing status is determined on the basis of total test or subtest
performance. The total test or subtest score is based on the number of raw score points earned on each section
(multiple-choice section and, for some subtests, constructed-response section); the proportion accounted for by
each section, if applicable; and the scaling of that score. Raw scores are converted to a scale of 100 to 300, with
the scaled test or subtest score of 240 representing the minimum passing score. For each subtest of the Multiple
Subjects Examination, the multiple-choice items account for 90 percent of the total subtest score and the constructed-response items account for 10 percent of the total subtest score.
Retaking the ORELA
Examinees who do not pass a test or subtest may retake that test or subtest. Please note that examinees who wish
to retake a test must complete the registration process again.
